Mustafa Raja, a 16-year-old tennis champion from the Dawoodi Bohra community of Vancouver, was recently crowned the 2023 U16 Tennis B.C. Indoor Provincial Champion in both singles and doubles.
The tournament was played at the North Vancouver Tennis Centre in Vancouver, B.C. The top 16 U16 players from the province qualified to play for the coveted “Provincials”, which is held to choose the top 5 players to represent British Columbia at the Tennis Canada Nationals.
Mustafa, seeded fourth in the singles draw, defeated the No 1 seeded player in the semifinals, winning 4-6 6-1 6-1. In the final, Mustafa defeated the second seeded player by a score of 4-6 6-1 6-3 and so qualified to play the U16 Tennis Canada Nationals.
In the doubles category, Mustafa and his partner defeated the top seeded pair 6-3 6-1.
Mustafa, who attends Sullivan Heights Secondary School in Surrey, BC, is now ranked in the top 3 in British Columbia for his age group, and in the top 20 in Canada.
He next travels to Las Vegas, USA and Monterrey, Mexico to play three International Tennis Federation junior tournaments.
